Chris Nineham makes five observations about the anti-establishment mood in austerity Britain

1On many issues, the majority are well to the left of all three main parties.  60% want to see the railways renationalised for example. A majority think tackling inequality is more important than wealth creation. 

2This isn’t just about Labour – support for all three main three parties is plumetting. The majority of young people are planning not to vote. The Tories have lost 10% of their membership in two years.

3Higher immigration doesn’t lead to racism. Ukip is most popular where there are fewest immigrants. 

4More people are joining left-leaning political parties than anytime for nearly a generation. The SNP has recruited 50,000 members since the Scottish referendum, the Green Party has doubled its membership since 2013

5The economic situation is a more important issue for voters than immigration.
