Penny Hicks argues for the need to unite against the far-right, in Manchester and beyond
Stand up to Racism in Manchester organised a ‘Together Against the Far-Right’ launch on Sunday. The open-air rally was attended by around 150 people to hear local speakers.
In Manchester a hard-core fascist group led by Charlie Veitch (who was banned from the city until recently) regularly harass, film and intimidate any left-wing activity. They also harass vulnerable people forced to live on the streets.
When Hannah Spencer MP arrived at the rally, the crowd had dwindled somewhat, and this group attempted to storm the platform. Having been prevented by stewards, they then chased the MP as she left the event. The police made no attempt to protect her and instead chose to attack event stewards trying to ensure her safety. After a slow response they eventually changed their focus and provided her with a car.
In Manchester, we must bring together everyone who is being attacked and harassed by this group on a constant basis, to demand their activity is threatening behaviour and not ‘a human right’.
We need to be organised with a coordinated strategy across campaigns to prevent them infiltrating events and work together to stand up to their bullying and intimidation.
