Palestine solidarity activist and Holocaust survivor Stephen Kapos spoke to Jamal Elaheebocus about why he is attending the International Anti-War Conference

Can you tell us who you are and why you’re attending the International Conference Against War?

I am Stephen Kapos and I am a survivor of the World War II Holocaust as well as the house-to-house fighting between the German Army and the advancing Soviet Army in Budapest, Hungary.

Whilst only seven-years old then, I have witnessed the full horrors of both the fascist terror and the total destruction of war around me.

Today we are experiencing renewed serious dangers of both: onset of fascism and of another world war!

We must urgently warn, protest and resist in overwhelming numbers against these dangers. ‘Never Again!’ must prevail!

This is why I am attending the International Conference Against War on Saturday 20 June, which will make an important contribution to raising the alarm and activating people worldwide!

Why do you think having an international anti-war movement is important?

We need to combat the increased militarism – which at least in Europe – is justified by the lies about a non-existent Russian aggression and claimed threat of their planned progressive expansion into country after country.

This artificial hysteria is not only dangerous but also diverts much needed resources away from real social needs, resulting in permanent austerity, war and division. Not in our name!

Before you go

The ongoing genocide in Gaza, Starmer’s austerity and the danger of a resurgent far right demonstrate the urgent need for socialist organisation and ideas. Counterfire has been central to the Palestine revolt and we are committed to building mass, united movements of resistance. Become a member today and join the fightback.
