University of Essex – UCU strike
University staff at the University of Essex are striking over plans to close the Southend campus, cut around 400 jobs and reduce course provision.
Members of UCU say the proposals would see more than one in ten staff lose their jobs and remove the only higher education provision in Southend. Staff have already helped make savings through reduced hours and voluntary redundancies but management is still pushing ahead with cuts.
UCU is calling on the university to rule out compulsory redundancies and work with unions to protect jobs. Further ballots involving UNISON and Unite members are also expected.
Strike dates:
- Monday 16 March, Tuesday 17 March, Wednesday 18 March and Thursday 19 March
Picket lines will take place on each strike day 8.00am to 10.30am
