A report into Birmingham City Council reveals that its attempts to break the ongoing bin strike have already cost £33.4 million, with evidence uncovered by Unite suggesting this figure is nearer £54 million.
The costs include lost income from services and millions spent on agency staff, security, and emergency measures, forcing cuts to other vital services. Ironically, honouring the “ballpark” fair pay deal agreed upon, and then abandoned, last May would have cost only a fraction of this amount.
Unite asserts the council’s stated concern over creating new “equal pay liabilities” is a legal smokescreen used to justify devastating pay cuts of up to £8,000 for workers.
There is no excuse for the Council not to settle as this fight is not about money, it’s about keeping us in our place.
