As the strike continues we must keep the pressure on, argues Chris Nineham

The lecturers’ strike has shaken the employers and the government. Everywhere pickets are big and lively. In many cities and towns up and down the country, there have been impressive protests and demonstrations that have brought students and uni workers together, and the strike has disrupted lectures and classes across the country.

The employers have asked for talks, but as Des Freedman from Goldsmiths argues, it is crucial that the action escalates to increase the pressure on management, who are clearly on the back foot.

Here is what you can do to show support and strengthen the strike:

• Take a petition around your workplace college or community and get it to the strikers locally.
• Get the resolution to support the strikers passed in your union, student union or Labour Party branch.
• Get your union or People’s Assembly banner down to the next picket line.
• Take a collection for the lecturers strike fund round your work.
• Take a picture of you and your colleagues, holding up a banner showing support and share it on social media #USSStrike.

If the lecturers win this it will be a huge boost for everyone in the movement.
