Transport union RMT announced today that members working at Harwich International Port will begin a campaign of discontinuous industrial action starting on Thursday of this week in a dispute over pay and conditions of service.

Harwich International Port have been notified that RMT members will be instructed not to book on for any shifts that commence between:-

18:00 hours on Thursday 29th July and 17:59 on Friday 30th July 2010.

18:00 hours on Tuesday 10th August and 17:59 on Wednesday 11th August 2010

RMT members have also been instructed not to work any overtime or additional hours between:-

00:01 hours on Thursday 29th July and 23:59 on Friday 30th July 2010

00:01 hours on Tuesday 10th August and 23:59 on Wednesday 11th August 2010

The action involves over 100 dockers, known as port operatives, and support staff and will impact on services to the Hook of Holland and Denmark as well as cruise services in and out of Harwich International.

RMT General Secretary Bob Crow said today:

"Our members at Harwich International Port were hit by a pay freeze last year and have been made a totally unacceptable offer this year. They are not prepared to sit back and watch while their standards of living are eroded and have voted overwhelmingly for action.

"RMT members at Harwich are sending out a clear signal to the company that they expect fair treatment on pay and conditions and that they are prepared to fight to get it.

"RMT remains available for talks and we hope that even at this late stage that the company will recognise the strength of feeling, and the determination of our members, and come back with an acceptable offer that addresses the issues at the core of this dispute."
