Peoples Assembly – Budget day demo: Austerity is a political choice. Tax the rich
On Wednesday October 30th, the Labour government will present its first budget. It’s widely predicted that Labour will signal more austerity, citing their fiscal rules.
As the People’s Assembly, we believe these rules to be arbitrary and damaging. It is not just stopping the cuts that matters, it’s repairing the damage of 14 years or more of relentless austerity.
For that to happen, we need bold steps to rebuild and invest in our public services, our schools, our NHS, our transport systems, our economy and our communities. We are planning a demo opposite Downing Street (Richmond Terrace) on Budget Day, Wednesday October 30th, declaring that Austerity is a Political Choice and demanding that the government takes the opportunity to make the real ‘hard choices’, such as taxing the rich and borrowing to invest, rather than the so-called ‘hard choices’ of withdrawing the winter fuel payments of pensioners, maintaining the two child benefit limit, or attacking the benefits of disabled people.
The plan is to hold a Halloween-linked stunt (as Austerity 2.0 is a real horror show!), so please come dressed in your spooky gear!
The Chancellor’s Budget Speech normally takes place between 12.30 and 1.30, followed by a debate, so we are planning to hold our demo from around 3pm onwards (following on from the WASPI demo in Parliament Square).
• Will you be able to join us on the 30th October?
• Would you be able to take part in a stunt?
• Would you be able to volunteer to help on the day?
• Are you hosting a demo in your area? Please let us know by emailing [email protected]. Thanks, and solidarity!
