There are two alleged victims (of sex-related crimes) and one potential victim (of existing attempts at political persecution). It is not morally justifiable to merely disregard ANY of those. That is why a creative, third solution is necessary, which unfortunately depends on the political will of the politicians involved. So far, the only state showing any such will has been Ecuador. Surprising that those principled defenders of human dignity in the Cameron government aren't prepared to take steps in that direction?

The US wants to destroy Wikileaks via Assange

If Assange is extradited to the US from Sweden (who have previously illegally handed over people to the US for rendition and torture in Egypt) and jailed for life or executed for espionage it's unlikely that anybody at Wikileaks will risk the wrath of the US again. Therefore Wikileaks will effectively be destroyed, and their great work on exposing the atrocities committed by US forces will be ended - paving the way for more atrocities.

Britaish and Swedish authorities don't care about rape

The British and Swedish authorities both claim that Julian Assange needs to be questioned over allegations of sexually assaulting two women. So why haven't they taken up the offer of questioning him in first Sweden, then Britain, then the Ecuadorian embassy? I think the real answer here is that, as Mya points out, the British and Swedish authorities dont actually care about the rape allegations and instead are intent on helping their Imperial ally, the USA, to get revenge on a man whose helped uncover some of the US government's dirty secret's.

Can I ask how Counterfire respond to the rape allegations made against Assange? As people who claim they are totally feminist and fighting hard against the patriarchal society you do seem to be paying much attention to the rape charges. Also, can I also make the point that Julian Assange alone isn't Wikileaks.. Other people worked on it too y'know, so I don't know why we're Jesusifying him.. Just sayin'. Congrats on your new cafe btw, I'll come and drink trendy lattes for the revolution some time soon... Can I book a room for my branch meeting too? Unfortunately, our usual meeting place for branch meetings is unavailable :(

Julian has not been charged

Julian Assange has no current charges against him. Previous allegation have not included Rape. He waited for 5 weeks in Sweden offering to speak to prosecutors who confirmed they did not want to speak with him. Swedish prosecutors regularly interview suspects in other countries and refuse to do so in this case. One of the women accusing him hosted a party the following day for him and insisted he stay again at his place. She also said she felt pressured by police. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0oZ8j3I2ac

If Julian Assange is innocent of the charges of rape against him then he should prove it and stand trial in Sweden. I understand that it is in the USA’s best interest to silence both him and Wikileaks and to that end I oppose his extradition. However, he has been charged with a very serious and vile crime that if protected, threatens the female species. I do not support extradition and I do not support rape. Regardless of his celebrity status and/or how useful he has been to people who oppose the imperialist West let us not forget that there are 2 very serious allegations of sexual assault against him. The irony here is that Assange and Wikileaks have exposed the atrocities of the imperialist West, but yet calls for the protection of his own.
